What’s New in Morzine this Winter? Part 2!

Oliver Goldbold for Morzine-Avoriaz Office de Tourisme

Yesterday we introduced you to seven exciting and new developments taking place in Morzine right now in preparation for the Winter 21 season. And today we have another seven for you!

Once again we’ll reiterate that it’s the intention of our resort management to open as scheduled on 19th December, should government regulations allow. Stay up to date on official announcements and developments on our How Will We Ski? page.

Tomorrow it’s the turn of Avoriaz, so all you lovers of the Portes du Soleil’s highest ski resort, stay tuned!

Dinner Above Morzine

The charming restaurant inside the Dahu hotel invites you for a bistronomic, socially distanced dining experience this winter. Perched on a spot that overlooks the twinkling lights of the village, the menu includes contemporary delights with a focus on locally sourced and sustainable produce. The service is refined and there’s always something extra special about dining in a hotel restaurant! You’ll need to book in advance by calling +33 (0) 4 50 75 92 92.

Chalet dinners on your terms

The catered ski holiday has become such a firm favourite amongst mountain-goers over the years, for reasons that are usually obvious. A chef and a host on-hand to prepare your meals; discovering a freshly baked cake upon your return from the mountain; all that chalet wine. Things might look a little different this year (thanks COVID), and in response, AliKats Mountain Holidays have launched a semi-catered package in all of their properties. Meals are freshly prepared in a central kitchen, limiting your contact with resort staff, before being delivered directly to your chalet fridge five times a week whilst you’re still on the mountain. Follow the easy reheating instructions and dine whenever suits you. Afternoon cakes, quality wine, champagne and canapés can also be included, giving you the fully catered ski chalet experience, whilst staying in your ski bubble. The Women’s Mountain Club Arrives in the Portes du Soleil

Having established themselves in the high-altitude playground of Chamonix over several seasons, the Women’s Mountain Club arrives in Morzine and our surrounding resorts this winter. Offering technical ski sessions in a friendly, encouraging environment, in addition to the Chamonix based mountain skills sessions with qualified guides, The Women’s Mountain Club is a community who meet regularly through the winter.

“It’s about empowering female skiers to explore the vast terrain of the Portes du Soleil and giving them the confidence to let rip,” Morzine partner and local instructor Ali Gibb explains. “The really exciting news is that we’ve been awarded a grant from The North Face COVID Explorer Fund to contributing to the cost of this winter’s sessions making them really accessible for everyone,” Ali continues. Thanks to support from Volkl, Marker and Dalbello, they’ll be running ski test and demo sessions too. “We’re hoping there’ll be a cross-over between our Chamonix sessions and our Portes du Soleil-based meet-ups too, giving ladies the chance to use their free season pass vouchers in other resorts, go exploring and meet like minded ski buddies.” Ali explains. Find out more and sign up at womensmountainclub.com

A New Bank Account for Non Residents

In the not too distant past, it was a real headache to open a bank account in one country while living in another. Fortunately our local AXA agents Marx Invernizzi and Nicolas Laurent have launched a new option aimed specifically at second homeowners or those with an economic interest in France. The AXA bank account is a simple online account including a free credit card, cheque book and access to AXA lending. All you’ll need to open a new account is your ID, proof of your property or economic interest and an email address. Set-up is virtual, so you can do it from the comfort of your own sofa, wherever that sofa is! Simply email agenceinvernizzietlaurent@axa.fr

Happy Birthday Mas de la Coutettaz

It’s 250 years since slate miner Antoine Plagnat built a farmhouse for his family in the centre of Morzine and today it’s the oldest building in the village. Mas de la Coutettaz has had just three owners in 250 years and in our Winter 21 issue we recount the fascinating history of this beautiful building, which these days is also known as The Farmhouse Hotel. There are plans for a celebration in 2021, stay tuned for updates. For now, discover more at thefarmhouse.co.uk.

Inside the Hive

Morzine gets itself a new year-round, purpose-built gym for 2021, but to call the Hive a gym is a huge understatement. “We wanted one place from which to host and coordinate all of our fitness activities,” the Buzz Performance team tells me. “So we’ve created the Hive.” From here Buzz Performance will coordinate their coaching sessions, nutrition consultations, classes, cycling and triathlon training, bike hire services and shop, plus much more. Spanning a staggering 400m2 of floor space and featuring a list of facilities as long as your arm, the Hive doesn’t do things by half. On the ground floor, beyond the Hive’s sleek welcome area, you’ll find Wild Beets Kitchen, an off-shoot of the Les Gets restaurant owned by passionate health foodie Jo Watts. Elsewhere on the Hive’s ground floor you’ll find a shop selling Buzz Performance merchandise (including those iconic Buzz cycling jerseys), bike equipment plus road and gravel bike hire during the summer season. A fitness studio with host spin, TRX and body conditioning classes, whilst on the lower floor there’s a 110m2 gym including a full range of top quality equipment. You’ll find a full review of the Hive in our Winter 21 magazine, including a number of extra special facilities too.
