In the shadow of the Avoriaz mountains, world-famous Electro and Dance DJ Chicane swaps sand for snow at his second Sun:Sets on the Slopes gig in Les Prodains.
Hosted by La Kinkerne, the spot is perfect for a party, with a just-off-the-piste beer garden, BBQ and outside bar. Crowds of skiers and snowboarders fresh off the mountain have come to experience Chicane’s signature ‘Chill to Kill’ vibe and to dance in the snow under a blazing blue sky. By the time Charlie Wright, resident DJ at Paradis, hands over the decks to Chicane, the place is buzzing.
Only in its third year, Chicane’s Sun:Sets gigs have gained huge momentum across the world. Originally starting on the sun-baked beaches of Ibiza and Dubai, Chicane and his old friend Chris Lavender spotted a gap in Morzine’s Apres-ski scene, and decided to bring an Ibizan atmosphere to the mountains.
“We want it to be a premier apres-ski experience. It takes time to create, which is why we’ve only done three events this season” Chicane said. “Next winter, we’re hoping to do a festival every two weeks, working with local people and flying in top talent from all over the world.”
A regular apres-ski festival on this scale would be the first of its kind for Morzine, and Chicane hints that every event will be streamed live to his Sun:Sets radio show, which is broadcast to 63 countries and has a whopping 300,000 downloads per month.
“A lot of people are waking up to Morzine at the moment. It’s just as epic as Ibiza and has such a great vibe.”
The final of the three Sun:Sets on the Slopes gigs is set to be the biggest, with BBC Radio 1’s Danny Howard as guest DJ, sponsors Monster Energy bringing in pro snowboard names and the whole party streamed live on Chicane’s radio show. “Knowing Danny, it’s going to be a massive party” Chicane laughs.
