Morzine, Les Gets and Avoriaz aren’t just ski resorts. There’s an active community with a combination of French and English residents, all looking to make a living and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Many of the area’s first residents came here to ski, but realising they’d need something to keep them in Mutzig and fondue, they’ve developed innovative ways to make a living from the area’s increasing popularity. With a bright idea, a bit of luck and a huge amount of hard work, these people have turned their Alpine dreams into reality and their accounts make for some pretty inspirational reading!
Amy Dearlove – Home grown chalet songstress
“A few winters ago I was doing my second season in Morzine and decided to play at an open mic night. After the performance the bar kindly offered me a regular spot for the rest of the season. A year later I saw a gap in the market: although the area had some great local musicians, no one was performing in chalets or more intimate venues. I jumped at the opportunity and found it was a success. Being invited into peoples’ homes to make their special occasions memorable is an unforgettable experience. The highlights this year have been singing a bride down the aisle and being the local artist to play at The Lounge Festival in Les Gets. I have been coming to Morzine in my family’s VW campervan since I was three. I moved here permanently five winters ago and the area has been the perfect place to start my musical career. The views are absolutely inspirational and the venues are really welcoming and receptive. Big artists take time out in places like this to write music and I get to live here all the time!
I love the freedom of working for myself. I get to sing at lots of diff erent venues and meet lots of amazingly interesting, friendly people. I sit down after a hard days work, give myself a pat on the back and say, ‘You did that! Well done Amy!’ I hope to reach out to some more resorts, regions and countries this year. Expanding and using my music to take me all over the world is my dream.”
