Golf probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when you think about Morzine and Avoriaz in the summer, but if you go up to Avoriaz and look out across what’s best known as the Proclou piste in the winter, you’ll see a beautifully-maintained Alpine golf course. And if you look behind you, past where you’ll find the Chapelle snow park, you’ll see the driving range.

The Morzine-Avoriaz Golf School has been running for kids over the age of six for the past three years, and they know how a little tuition can improve a child’s game and stoke-levels. Their summer golf programmes have seen over 30 kids regularly attend and this summer’s lessons kick off this Saturday, the 15th June. Lessons take place every Wednesday and Saturday throughout the summer and they’re a great way for kids to learn, make new friends and have fun.

While Golf probably isn’t the first sport you’d think of for kids out here in the summer, it’s actually a great sport for children of all ages, especially in the mountains because it’s just that little bit more beautiful! As well as helping kids to enjoy  being outside, playing golf helps them to develop body coordination, improve their reflexes and work on endurance (plus, they’re much less likely to get hurt compared to mountain biking!). It’s also great for their mental development, teaching respect for others, patience, focus and concentration.

All ability levels are welcome, and groups will work with the club’s resident pro, Eric Blanc, on everything from basic technique to getting their first handicap. Kids must be over six to play and lessons are adapted so all age groups and ability levels can make the most of their time on the course. Kids will even be awarded flags as they improve, like etoiles at ski school or belts in judo.

The cost of the summer course is €120 plus €29 for a licence and membership to the Association Sportive du Golf de Morzine-Avoriaz, who run the golf school. This includes all lessons and access to the course. If you’re not sure if your child will enjoy golf, they can attend two taster sessions at the beginning of the course, and kids can also borrow a set of clubs from the school if they don’t have their own.

If it sounds like something your kids might like, Golf School starts this Saturday, the 15th June, and runs every Wednesday and Saturday throughout the summer months. You never know, they might discover a brand new mountain sport right on their doorstep!

To sign up, get in touch with Sandra Richard by emailing as.golf.morzine.avoriaz@gmail.com. And you can check out the club’s website HERE. And of course, if you’re a keen golfer yourself, there are plenty of options to get you on the course, from a seasonal membership to one-off green fees – find out more HERE.
