This Week – Eco Tax
This Friday freebie has been requested by Neil Joyce, but will be of interest to anyone thinking of buying either a new car or a second hand car here in France or imported from abroad.
If you are buying a brand NEW car you may be eligible for a rebate or a penalty depending on the vehicle. No rebate is given on a second hand car.
REBATES
The buyer of a new car with CO2 emissions of lower than 105grams of CO2 per kilometre is eligible for the bonus rebate. Bonuses will depend on the level and will change from year to year.

If you are also trading in a vehicle older than 10 years old for scrapping at the same time the new car if ordered, then you will benefit from a further bonus (prime à la casse) of 500€.
There are extra bonuses if you are buying a new car powered by a combination diesel or petrol-electric motor, if it doesn’t emit more than 110g CO2 per kilometre and for electric cars.
To receive this rebate you have to fill in a form: http://vosdroits.service-public.fr/particuliers/R18200.xhtml and send it to the ‘Centre National pour l’aménagement des structures des exploitations agricoles within three months of buying the car.
ECO TAXES
A penalty tax is due on any car with high emissions of over 141 grams of CO2 per kilometre. It is a one off payment and applies to any NEW car registered in France from 2008 or any USED car imported and registered in France from 2008.
Please note that in the second case, a vehicle bought and registered abroad and then imported into France- the amount of tax reduced is reduced by 10% for each year from the date of first registration.
The eco tax penalty is paid at the point of first registration of a NEW vehicle and applies (in 2012) to emissions as follows:
200€ for véhicules with emissions from 141 to 150 grams of CO2 per kilometre
500€ for véhicules with emissions from 151 to 155 grams of CO2 per kilometre
750€ for véhicules with emissions from 156 to 180 grams of CO2 per kilometre
1300€ for véhicules with emissions from 181 to 190 grams of CO2 per kilometre
2300€ for véhicules with emissions from 191 to 230 grams of CO2 per kilometre
3600€ for véhicules with emissions over 230 grams of CO2 per kilometre
