The incident occurred at 9.30am this morning, shortly after Avoriaz’ lift network had opened for the day. A light aircraft, attempting to take off from the airfield adjacent to the Procolou area, just below the centre of Avoriaz and the busy Plateau area, aborted its take off and glided onto the piste.
One skier, a Polish woman in her 50s, sustained serious injuries to her hand and was immediately transferred via helicopter to hospital in Annemasse.
An investigation into the accident is now underway but a spokesman for the local emergency services said:
“We only narrowly avoided a catastrophe. The plane passed under the ski lift, just missing the trees and then a group of children before touching down on a blue run on which the woman was skiing.”
