The Valley Vipers formed back in May, practising in the school sports hall in St Jean d’Aulps on a Wednesday evening. Between 7pm and 8.30pm each week there’s a warm up, a fitness session, skills practise and then games of netball – everyone is welcome to come along!
Over 35 girls from Morzine, Les Gets, St Jean d’Aulps and further afield have joined the team and last night the Valley Vipers played their first competitive match against a team of ex-pats in Geneva. The competition included four national team players who’d been playing together for significantly longer than our own Vipers! The score was 45-16 to the opposition, which all involved agreed was not a reflection on the standard of play by the Vipers. A re-match is expected in a couple of weeks time!
The team is trained by Joanne Sheppard, a valley resident and PR Teacher in Geneva. Joanne is also an experienced netball coach, working closely with Netball Switzerland. After last night’s match she told us
“We had a great 1st game against Geneva netball club. We had 20 girls swapping in and out our team throughout the hours game. Everyone played out of their skins and should be really proud of their efforts especially as 4 of their team play nationally for Switzerland. Although we didn’t win (45 – 16 ) the score didn’t reflect the improvement and commitment that we displayed and actually 2 of the quarters we only lost by 3 goals. Watch this space for our result when we travel to Geneva to take them on on their home turf.”
